Urgent Action Needed as Diphtheria Kills 50 Children in Kano

The Kano State House of Assembly has reported that over 50 children have died due to a diphtheria outbreak in Rano Local Government Area. During a plenary session on Monday, member Ibrahim Muhammad, representing Rano Constituency, moved a motion for urgent intervention from Governor Abba Yusuf.

The outbreak has been particularly severe in the Ridin and Sabuwar Kaura areas. Muhammad noted that while emergency measures, including medication and health worker deployment, have been initiated, further support is essential.

He expressed concern over the recurrence of the outbreak after a similar incident last year. Other lawmakers, including Usman Abubakar Tasiu and Saleh Ahmad, supported the motion, emphasizing the need for an emergency committee and intensified vaccination efforts.

The House approved the motion, directing its Committee on Health to collaborate with the Ministry of Health for the implementation of emergency relief measures.
