Kano State Suspends Water Scheme Manager for Sabotage

The Kano State Government has announced the immediate suspension of the manager of the Thomas Region Water Scheme, Thomas, over allegations of sabotage and looting. This action was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change.

The suspension is pending an investigation into the alleged sabotage of facilities aimed at addressing the persistent water scarcity in the state. Inspections revealed that despite the completion of rehabilitation projects three months ago, the facilities had been vandalized, with significant theft of electrical wires and other components.

The water scheme, intended to serve three local government areas, has remained non-functional for several years. Security personnel assigned to protect the facilities were also found to be negligent.

The government has warned that legal action will follow if culpability is established. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reaffirmed the commitment to restoring water infrastructure across the state.
