Kano State Establishes Committee to Reform Almajiri System

The Kano State Government has inaugurated a 20-member advisory committee focused on reforming the Almajiri education and welfare system, as announced in a statement by Musa Muhammad, Press Secretary to the Secretary to the State Government. This initiative, approved by Governor Abba Yusuf, aims to create a sustainable framework for regulating and integrating the Tsangaya education system while ensuring the welfare and dignity of the children involved.

The committee is chaired by Abdulkarim Maude, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, with Amina Yargaya, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, serving as secretary. The committee's members include various commissioners, representatives from traditional institutions, legal professionals, and child-rights advocacy groups.

They are tasked with assessing the current Tsangaya system, developing regulatory frameworks, and proposing measures to eliminate exploitative practices. The committee will also explore sustainable funding mechanisms and engage with key stakeholders, including Qur’anic teachers and community leaders, to ensure effective reform.
