Kano Council Investigates Sale of Substandard Solar Panels

The Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KCPC) has initiated an investigation into public complaints regarding the sale of solar panels that allegedly do not conform to the power output specifications indicated on their labels. Dr Ibrahim Garba-Muhammad, the Executive Secretary of the KCPC, announced this in a statement from the council’s Director of Public Enlightenment, Jamilu Mustapha, on Wednesday in Kano.

The council plans to conduct a thorough investigation and take appropriate action if the claims are substantiated, emphasizing its commitment to consumer protection against deceptive trade practices and substandard products. A petition by Yusuf Sani, representing the complainants, raised concerns about solar panel dealers misleading consumers with inaccurate power ratings, which could potentially damage energy storage batteries and pose explosion risks.

Sani also alleged that many of these products were imported without adequate quality assurance. The KCPC previously reported confiscating substandard goods valued at over ₦300 million in the last three months.
