Nigeria Confirms No New Ban on Domestic Workers in Kuwait

On Saturday, the Federal Government of Nigeria clarified that there is no new ban imposed by Kuwait on the recruitment of Nigerian domestic workers. This statement was made in response to misleading reports in the media.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its Spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, explained that the suspension of recruitment and deployment of Nigerian domestic workers to Kuwait was initiated several years ago by the Nigerian Embassy in Kuwait City. This suspension was put in place pending the resolution of concerns regarding the welfare, protection, and working conditions of Nigerian workers in Kuwait.

The embassy had formally requested this suspension from Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs until adequate safeguards for workers' rights were established. The ministry emphasized that the situation reflects a continuation of measures to ensure the safety and dignity of Nigerian citizens seeking employment abroad.

Nigeria and Kuwait will continue to engage diplomatically on labor and migration issues to establish fair recruitment practices and legal protections for workers.
