Kwara LG Suspends Night Vigils After Deadly Attack

The Ekiti Local Government Area in Kwara State, led by Executive Chairman Awelewa Olawal Gabriel, has ordered an indefinite suspension of night vigils across local worship centers following a gunmen attack at Ori Ok Ajaiy near Ikerin Opin. This attack led to the deaths of three individuals and the abduction of 15 others.

The decision was made based on recommendations from the council's security advisory team. Awelewa urged religious bodies to relocate services to safer areas within town and village limits and to limit services to a maximum of two hours.

In a statement issued by Chief Press Secretary Princ Dada Sundai, the council chairman expressed particular concern over churches continuing to hold night services in isolated areas despite repeated warnings from the Christian Association of Nigeria. Awelewa emphasized the importance of prioritizing human life over rituals and warned that the reality of insecurity in the community must be confronted honestly.

He assured that the council would work with state government security agencies to enhance surveillance and rescue abducted worshippers.
