Kwara Government Approves Allowances After Lawyers' Strike

The Kwara State Government has approved the payment of outstanding Furniture and Robe Allowances owed to State Counsels, following an indefinite strike initiated by the Law Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN) on July 27, 2026. This strike was prompted by the government's failure to address unpaid entitlements after a seven-day ultimatum.

The approved payments include the outstanding balance of the 2016–2020 Furniture Allowance, the 2024 Furniture Allowance, and Robe Allowances for 2024, 2025, and 2026. Dr. Olufunke Mercy Shittu, the Acting Head of Service, communicated this decision in a memo after reviewing LOAN's demands.

The Commissioner for Finance has been instructed to implement these payments. LOAN emphasized the critical role its members play in the justice system and expressed dissatisfaction with previous engagements with the state government, including discussions with Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, which did not resolve the issues.

The latest approval aims to improve workers' welfare and address some of the outstanding allowances that triggered the industrial action.
