Kwara Magistrates to Strike Over Unpaid Allowances

Magistrates in Kwara State have announced an indefinite strike set to commence on July 2, 2026, due to ongoing welfare concerns and unpaid allowances. The decision was made during a congress held by the Magistrates Association of Nigeria, where members voiced their frustrations over neglect and worsening working conditions.

The association's communiqué, signed by its chairman, indicated that members unanimously agreed that industrial action was necessary due to the lack of meaningful intervention regarding their salary structure and unpaid statutory entitlements. Magistrates reportedly earn less than court registrars, which they described as an unfair situation.

Additionally, they have not received furniture allowances, which are expected every four years, and there are complaints about the unequal distribution of official vehicles. The chief judge of Kwara State has advised that a minimum notice period of seven days is required before the strike can commence, leading to a deadline for resolution.

If unresolved, the strike is expected to significantly disrupt court activities across the state.
