Kwara Magistrates Threaten Strike Over Welfare Issues

Magistrates in Kwara State, represented by the Magistrates Association of Nigeria, Kwara State Chapter, have threatened to go on strike starting July 2, 2026, due to perceived discriminatory welfare treatment. A communiqué issued following an emergency congress held on Wednesday revealed that members expressed frustration over years of neglect by the state government.

They unanimously demanded immediate action on several welfare issues, including salary reviews, payment of outstanding allowances, and equitable distribution of official vehicles. The association criticized the current situation where grade level 14 magistrates earn less than their counterparts, describing it as unjust and demoralizing.

They also highlighted the non-payment of furniture allowances, which have not been disbursed since the administration of former Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed. The Chief Judge of the state was reportedly advised about the ultimatum, which requires compliance within seven days following extensive deliberations.

The association's leadership continues to engage relevant stakeholders to resolve these issues.
