Kwara Police Arrest Kidnappers' Spy, Dismiss Hostage Claims

On July 14, 2026, the Kwara State Police Command apprehended 30-year-old Haruna Rabiu, identified as a member of a notorious kidnapping syndicate, during a coordinated operation by the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) and local police in Patigi. CP Adekimi Ojo stated that Rabiu was allegedly monitoring the area for criminal activities and is linked to the Auta Ilorin kidnapping network.

During interrogation, he provided valuable intelligence about the syndicate's operations and other suspected members. The police recovered three mobile phones from him, which are undergoing forensic examination.

Additionally, the police dismissed claims from a viral video alleging that 176 hostages were being held by bandits in Kaiama, stating that the number was fabricated by the kidnappers. The police commissioner emphasized ongoing efforts to rescue any victims, confirming that locals had only identified about 10 individuals from the video.
