Lagos State Approves 13% BRT Fare Increase Effective March 2026

The Lagos State Government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved a 13% fare increase for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, which will take effect on March 2, 2026. This fare adjustment is part of a broader reform initiative aimed at addressing significant challenges faced by public transport operators in the current economic climate.

The decision follows a public appeal and highlights the mounting pressures that threaten the long-term viability of transport operations in Nigeria. According to a statement from Kolawole Ojelabi, head of corporate communications at the Lagos State Transport Management Authority (LAMATA), the fare review is necessary to offset the severe impacts of ongoing economic pressures, including a headline inflation rate of 15.15% as of December 2025.

The fare adjustment is also intended to help operators manage rising expenses related to vehicle maintenance, repair, and staff salaries, particularly after the implementation of a new national minimum wage.
