Lagos to Expand Red Line Fleet with New Trains by 2026

The Lagos State Government plans to add three eight-coach trains to the Red Line fleet by the third quarter of 2026, as disclosed by Kolawole Ojelabi, head of corporate communications at the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA). This development comes in response to recent passenger complaints regarding technical issues affecting the Oyingbo-Agbado service.

The new acquisition will consist of three train sets, bringing the total number of coaches in the fleet to 24. The expansion is part of a long-term strategy to improve service reliability and enhance the commuting experience for passengers along the corridor.

LAMATA acknowledged recent reports on social media highlighting passenger discomfort due to faulty air conditioning systems in the coaches and apologized for the inconvenience. The Red Line, which spans 27 kilometers from Oyingbo to Agbado in Ogun State, is set to commence full passenger operations on October 15, 2024, following the commissioning of its first phase on February 29, 2024, by President Bola Tinubu.
