Lagos Reopens Six Steel Companies After Compliance Check

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has reopened six iron and steel manufacturing companies located in Odogunyan, Ikorodu, after confirming that they have taken corrective measures to address environmental violations. This decision was announced in a statement signed by Dr Tunde Ajayi, the General Manager of LASEPA, on Thursday.

The companies were previously sealed on July 27 due to serious environmental infractions discovered during an enforcement operation. The affected firms include African Steel Mills Ltd, Pulkit Alloy and Steel Ltd, LandCraft Industries Ltd, Sunflag Steel Nigeria Ltd, Gemini Steel Nigeria Ltd, and Top Steel Nigeria Ltd.

A comprehensive compliance assessment revealed that these companies had improved their environmental practices. LASEPA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the companies, committing them to adhere to environmental laws and implement corrective measures.

The enforcement action was prompted by data from LASEPA’s air quality monitoring network, which indicated elevated pollution levels in the area.
