Lagos Launches Initiative to Reduce Pollution and Generate Income from Used Cooking Oil

Lagos State, through collaboration with the Lagos State Environment Protection Agency (LASEPA) and Shell Foundation, has initiated a statewide project to collect household used cooking oil (UCO) for environmental protection and income generation. The program, known as the Kiosk Initiative, involves setting up dedicated collection points at LASEPA's 21 zonal offices across Lagos. Dr. Babatunji Ajayi, the General Manager of LASEPA, highlighted the initiative's dual purpose of reducing environmental pollution and creating economic opportunities for residents. The improper disposal of UCO poses significant environmental risks, including drainage blockages and ecosystem degradation.

Mr. Abiodun Ogunleye, the Zonal Director of LASEPA, assured full support for the initiative to ensure widespread access across the state. Mr. Olabisi Shonibare, the Grant Management Innovator, emphasized that the project aligns with Lagos State's environmental agenda and represents a step towards achieving zero waste in Lagos. Mr. Ayo Banjo, the Technical Project Lead at Ororo Waste Management, explained that the initiative aims to create a structured ecosystem for sustainable environmental practices, public health improvement, and income generation through the global market.
