Lagos Trains 452 Vendors to Combat Cholera in Lagos

The Lagos State Environment Protection Agency (LASEPA) has successfully trained 452 food and water vendors and sensitized 1,054 residents, including 623 women and 431 men, to prevent cholera outbreaks in flood-prone areas. This initiative is part of a 12-month emergency capacity-building program implemented in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and funded by a $225,000 grant from the Government of Japan.

The program was launched following a cholera outbreak in June 2024, which recorded 579 suspected cases and 29 fatalities. The training focused on hygiene standards, safe food and water handling, and waste disposal practices across eight local government areas, including Ikorodu and Alimosho.

Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, emphasized the importance of community engagement in breaking the cholera transmission chain.

The project aims to complement government measures to enhance sanitation infrastructure and improve community ownership of health initiatives.
