LASTMA to Launch Short Code for Traffic Updates Soon

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) is set to introduce a short code to facilitate traffic updates and complaints from residents, especially motorists. Mr.

Olalekan Bakar Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, disclosed this information in an interview. The new short code will replace the current long digit system and is expected to be operational within the next two to three weeks, pending final approval from network providers.

The service will be free and aims to encourage public engagement in reporting road traffic situations, emergencies, and traffic congestion updates. LASTMA's current call center, which handles approximately 10 calls from Lagos residents, has received nearly 300 calls from January to March, although there have been challenges integrating the short code into the agency's system.

The agency emphasizes its collaborative efforts with other emergency services, including the Lagos State Ambulance Service and the Nigeria Police Force, to effectively address traffic issues in the state.
