LASWA and Interferry Launch Ferry Safety Training Program

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and Interferry have initiated a ferry safety training program that emphasizes seamanship. This program aims to equip participants with practical knowledge in areas such as rope handling, knot tying, mooring, and deck maintenance.

The training commenced with a virtual mentoring session on June 17, 2023, led by Jeff Joyce, Vice President of Marine Operations at Northumberland Ferries. The practical field exercises took place on June 24, 2023, at Sea School Apapa, coordinated by Engr.

Ukem Sundai and Dr. Ekundayo, alongside seven experienced maritime instructors.

Fifty participants were divided into three groups to engage in hands-on exercises designed to reinforce teamwork and operational efficiency. The program is part of an 18-month initiative to develop technical skills and leadership in the ferry sector across Africa.

The next module will focus on emergency preparedness and risk management, scheduled for July 2023.
