LASWA Seizes 120 Damaged Life Jackets in Safety Inspection

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) conducted a safety inspection on Friday, during which they confiscated 120 damaged life jackets from boat operators. This operation was part of LASWA's efforts to ensure strict adherence to waterways safety regulations and to enhance operational standards within the state's water transport sector.

The inspection covered several terminals and jetties, including Ipakodo, Bayeku, Ijed, Ebut Ero, Liverpool, Sabokoji, and Alex Coconut. LASWA disclosed that the 120 defective life jackets were immediately withdrawn from circulation to prevent any potential risk to passengers using the waterways.

The authority noted that a number of vessels were found to require repairs to meet safety compliance standards, particularly regarding vessel condition and the use of certified life jackets, which remain compulsory for operations. LASWA warned that enforcement operations would continue across ferry terminals in the state to ensure total compliance with waterways regulations, reminding operators of their legal responsibility to maintain safe vessels and provide passengers with approved life jackets.
