Nigeria Launches West Africa's First EyeSi Surgical Simulator

Nigeria has achieved a significant milestone in ophthalmic medical education with the unveiling of West Africa's first EyeSi Surgical Simulator and the inauguration of the Gbemisola Olowolafe Centre for Ophthalmic Surgical Simulation at the Guinness Eye Centre, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). This initiative, a collaboration between the Faculty of Ophthalmology of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN), LUTH, and the Tunji Olowolafe Foundation, aims to enhance specialist training and improve patient outcomes in Nigeria and the wider West African region.

Dr Tunji Olowolafe, Chairman of the Tunji Olowolafe Foundation and Chancellor of Ekiti State University, emphasized the importance of continuous education in professional development during the inauguration. He noted that the simulator allows surgeons to practice delicate procedures safely and receive objective feedback.

Olowolafe criticized the culture of treating professional certification as the end of learning, advocating for ongoing training to reinforce and update existing knowledge.
