Oyo State Governor Makinde to Launch Climate Council

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde is set to inaugurate the Oyo State Climate Council next week, a significant step in strengthening climate governance and advancing environmental sustainability in the state. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to tackle climate change and implement a review of the state's climate action plan.

Ademola Aderinto, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, stated that the council will serve as the apex policy advisory body on climate change, providing strategic direction for climate mitigation and adaptation initiatives. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources will commence a technical review of the Oyo State Climate Action Plan, involving stakeholders from various sectors, including civil society organizations and academia.

This exercise aims to produce a comprehensive roadmap for climate action across the state, focusing on critical areas such as vulnerability assessments, forest management, water resources, agriculture, and urban settlements. The council's inauguration and subsequent review of the climate action plan are expected to culminate by the end of August 2026.
