Mali Withdraws Recognition of Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic

The Malian government, led by Abdoulaye Diop, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, announced the suspension of recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR). This decision follows a thorough review of the Sahara dispute's implications for peace and security in the sub-region.

The announcement was made after Diop's meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita during a visit to Bamako. Mali expressed its support for Morocco's autonomy plan as a credible and realistic solution to the dispute, emphasizing the importance of Moroccan sovereignty over the southern provinces of Sahara.

The Malian government also indicated that it would communicate this decision to regional and international organizations, noting a trend of countries, including Bolivia, withdrawing recognition of the Polisario entity in favor of supporting a UN-led political process. This decision aligns with the UN Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted on October 31, 2025.
