Man Drowns in Lagos River After Alleged Cultist Chase

Opeyemi drowned in a river in the Agility area of Mile 12, Lagos State, on Saturday, September 12, after allegedly being chased by suspected cultists. According to a police source, Opeyemi was on his way to purchase an item when he was pursued by some individuals who eventually caught and attacked him, prompting him to jump into the river to escape.

A resident reported that attempts to rescue him were thwarted by his attackers. However, an anti-cultism advocacy platform, Naija Confra, presented conflicting accounts, with some residents claiming Opeyemi was under the influence of a substance and jumped into the river voluntarily.

Others maintained that he was indeed chased and attacked. The situation surrounding the incident remains unclear, and the conflicting narratives have yet to be independently verified.

Abimbola Adebisi, the state Police Public Relations Officer, was contacted for a response but had not provided one by the time of the report.
