Family Reveals Cause of Nurse's Death at Minister's Home

Mary Habila, a 25-year-old nurse, died on June 27 at the residence of David Umahi, the Minister of Works, in Umunaga, Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area, Ebonyi State. Her family disclosed during her burial on August 21 that she had been living with a congenital heart condition, specifically a hole in her heart, which worsened despite medical attention and support from loved ones.

Habila's death attracted significant public attention, leading to calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding it. Minister Umahi requested the state police command to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death, but Habila's family opposed this request.

Despite their objections, the Ebonyi command indicated it would proceed with the autopsy. Additionally, the Incorporated Trustees of the Southern Kaduna Peoples' United Associations (SOKAPU) filed a N20 billion lawsuit against Umahi, claiming he breached his duty of care while Habila was in his custody.
