Analyst Warns Mass Defections to APC Threaten Democracy

Political analyst Rabiu has expressed concerns regarding the trend of mass defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that it poses a danger to Nigeria's democratic institutions and may lead to reduced voter participation in the upcoming 2027 elections. He highlighted that despite Nigeria's constitutional status as a multi-party democracy, recent political developments suggest a gradual slide towards a dominant party system, reminiscent of the two-party structure introduced during former military ruler Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida's regime.

Rabiu noted that the People's Democratic Party (PDP), which remains the main opposition party, has weakened since losing power in 2015 due to internal crises and leadership disputes. He cited the increasing pressure on opposition figures, including former Kaduna State Governor Abubakar Malami, as indicative of the growing dominance of the ruling party.

Rabiu warned that this trend could embolden the executive arm of government and discourage voter participation, calling for immediate steps to safeguard Nigeria's democracy, including enhanced civic education and stronger engagement from civil society groups.
