Minister Advocates Digital Identity to Combat Illegal Mining

The Nigerian Minister has advocated for the implementation of digital identity systems to address illegal mining activities in the country. This statement was made during a meeting with Dr.

Abisoy Coker Odusote, the Director General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), in Abuja. The Minister described digital identity technology as an essential tool for regulating investments and ensuring national security.

The newly enacted NIMC Act of 2026 provides a stronger legal framework for digital governance, which will facilitate deeper collaboration among ministries and improve regulatory oversight in the mining sector. The Minister stressed the importance of integrating digital identity into the mining sector to enhance database management, regulatory compliance, and law enforcement.

Furthermore, a commitment was made to strengthen collaboration with host communities and organizations to support ongoing reforms and promote sustainable development within Nigeria's mining sector.
