Morocco Elected to AU Peace and Security Council for Two-Year Term

Morocco has been elected into the African Union Peace and Security Council for a two-year term after a first-round vote held in Addis Ababa. The Kingdom of Morocco secured two-thirds of the ballot with 34 votes out of a total of 48 during the election conducted as part of the 48th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council.

Morocco had previously served two-year mandates on the council from 2018 to 2020 and a three-year term from 2022 to 2025. The official information stated that Morocco contributed to improving the work methods and promoting best practices within the council during its previous mandates.

The country is described as having an inclusive approach alongside other member states of the Peace and Security Council to make decisions aimed at preventing and managing conflicts in the African Union. The election took place ahead of the 39th African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government scheduled for February 14-15, with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita leading the delegation.
