NBBF Expands Men's Premier League to 20 Teams for 2026

The Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) has announced a significant expansion of the Men's Premier League, increasing the number of teams from 16 to 20 ahead of the 2026 season. This overhaul includes the introduction of new player eligibility rules aimed at boosting homegrown talent while ensuring a balanced competition among clubs.

The league is set to kick off on May 9, with a restructured format that features two conferences. Each club will be allowed to sign players from three categories: home-based, diaspora, and foreign players, with no restrictions on home-based players.

Clubs can sign a maximum of two foreign players, provided they present a valid FIBA international transfer certificate and pay an administrative fee for registration. The roster will be limited to a 15-man squad, with a two-week transfer window created at the start of the playoffs.

The league will also implement a promotion and relegation system, with specific deadlines for club applications and registration.
