Tinubu Submits 15 Nominees for NHRC Confirmation

President Bola Tinubu has sent a request to the Senate for the confirmation of 15 nominees to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). This move aims to strengthen the country's human rights protection framework.

The request was conveyed in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and was read during a plenary session. The proposed reconstitution of the commission's board is in line with statutory provisions.

Dr. Salamatu Hussaina Suleiman has been nominated as the chairperson of the board, while Dr.

Anthony Ojukwu, SAN, is proposed to serve as the executive secretary. The list of nominees includes 13 individuals from diverse professional backgrounds, notably including journalist Ayo Adewuyi from Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and legal practitioner Chinony Obiaku, SAN.

The nominations were made pursuant to Section 2(3) of the National Human Rights Commission Establishment Act 2010, which empowers the constitution of the board, subject to Senate confirmation, to enhance the commission's capacity to effectively discharge its mandate.
