Niger State Calls for Unity to Combat Neglected Tropical Diseases Outbreak

The Niger State government, led by Dr. Murtala Moham Bagana, urges a collaborative approach to tackle Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) after the World Health Organization confirmed an outbreak of Buruli ulcer in Munya Local Government Area.

Dr. Bagana emphasized the importance of both government and societal support, including financial and material assistance, to halt the spread of these diseases.

While 16 NTDs have been identified in the state, five have been successfully eliminated. Challenges such as poverty, inadequate attention, limited funds, and lack of basic amenities in rural communities continue to hinder efforts.

Dr. Aliyu Usman, the state coordinator for the World Health Organization, confirmed 11 cases of Buruli ulcer in Munya and deployed experts to assess the situation.

Regular campaigns and sustained political commitment are crucial to achieving disease elimination goals.
