Nigeria Denies Supporting Niger Coup Claims

The Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sola Enikanolaiye, has categorically dismissed claims that it supported the recent failed coup attempt in the Republic of Niger. In a statement signed on Thursday, Enikanolaiye stated that Nigeria does not endorse military coups or any unconstitutional changes of government.

He described the circulating claims as false and an attempt to damage Nigeria's reputation. The statement reiterated Nigeria's commitment to peace, democracy, and stability in West Africa, emphasizing that the country will not support any form of illegality.

Enikanolaiye referenced Nigeria's official statement from August 30, 2026, expressing concern over the situation in Niger and advocating for a peaceful return to constitutional order. The ministry reaffirmed Nigeria's membership in ECOWAS and rejected any suggestions of condoning the coup, urging Nigerians to disregard misleading online narratives.
