Nigeria Denies Allegations of Supporting Niger Coup

The Federal Government of Nigeria has refuted claims suggesting that Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) supported the recent failed coup attempt in Niger Republic. Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, labeled these allegations as false and malicious, aimed at misleading the public and tarnishing Nigeria's reputation.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, Enikanolaiye reiterated Nigeria's opposition to military coups and unconstitutional changes of government, affirming the country's dedication to peace, democracy, and stability in West Africa. He referenced a previous statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on August 30, 2026, expressing concern over the situation in Niger and advocating for a peaceful resolution.

Enikanolaiye also rejected the notion that Nigeria's ECOWAS membership implied endorsement of the coup, urging citizens to disregard misleading narratives circulating online. He reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance and the African Union's stance against unconstitutional governance changes.
