Nigeria Denies Supporting Niger Coup Attempt Claims

On Thursday, Sola Enikanolaye, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, issued a statement denying any endorsement of the recent failed coup attempt in Niger Republic. The statement, made available to newsmen in Lokoja, rejected claims circulating on social media that suggested Nigeria and ECOWAS supported the coup.

Enikanolaye described these claims as baseless and a deliberate attempt to misinform the public and damage Nigeria's reputation. He emphasized that Nigeria is a peace-loving nation committed to constitutional order and democracy in West Africa and the Sahel.

The minister referenced an official Press Statement No: MFA/PR/2026/220 from August 30, 2026, which expressed Nigeria's concern over the situation in Niger and called for a peaceful return to stability. He reiterated Nigeria's commitment to the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance and the African Union's stance against unconstitutional changes of government.
