Nigeria to Host ECOWAS Brown Card Meeting in 2026

Nigeria is set to host the ECOWAS Brown Card zonal meeting in April 2026, marking the first high-level gathering aimed at overhauling the operational efficiency of cross-border motor insurance within the West African sub-region. The Nigerian National Bureau announced that the meeting will focus on improving access to the ECOWAS Brown Card scheme, which automatically includes motor insurance policies at no additional cost.

The event is crucial as the sub-region faces technological disparities and aims to integrate a digital framework for managing cross-border claims. Delegates will discuss strategies to ensure that victims of road traffic accidents involving foreign motorists receive prompt compensation, regardless of the member state where the accident occurs.

Raphael Abiiba, Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Bureau, emphasized Nigeria's leadership role in this initiative, reaffirming the commitment to enhance operational efficiency and regional integration. The meeting is expected to attract industry leaders and regulatory authorities across West Africa, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria's 2026 diplomatic and economic calendar.
