Nigerian Law Society Launches Free Legal Aid via WhatsApp

The Nigerian Law Society (NLS) has unveiled a virtual legal aid initiative aimed at providing free pro bono legal services to indigent Nigerians through platforms like WhatsApp. This initiative, known as the Virtual Legal Aid Initiative Nigeria (VLAIN), was announced in a letter from Dr.

Tony Clinton Jaja, the Executive Secretary of NLS, dated March 11, 2026. It is designed for citizens earning below the current federal minimum wage of ₦70,000 per month.

The NLS aims to impact the lives of 100 million indigent Nigerians within six months of the initiative's commencement. The project will involve training 100,000 paralegal lawyers across Nigeria, with a goal of training over 1,200,000 within a year.

The initiative seeks to address the gap in free legal services, as research indicates that approximately 240 million Nigerians are unable to access pro bono legal aid when facing legal challenges. The Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, established in 1979, has limitations in its service provision, primarily focusing on criminal court cases.
