CSL Advocates for Criminal Justice Reform in Nigeria

The Center for Socio-Legal Studies (CSL) in Abuja has called upon professionals, including journalists and lawyers, to effectively implement criminal justice laws in Nigeria. During a capacity-building training organized in conjunction with the MacArthur Foundation, CSL President Prof.

Yemi Akinseye-George emphasized the critical role of the legal profession in advancing the criminal justice system. He noted the challenges faced in implementing the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) and the need for a new generation of young Nigerian lawyers to advocate for reform.

Akinseye-George highlighted the overcrowding in correctional facilities and the inadequacies of the legal aid system, which is under-resourced according to the Nigerian Bar Association. He stressed that the rule of law is essential for societal progress and that accountability must be upheld, particularly for influential individuals.

The training aims to ensure that the criminal justice system operates effectively, providing a voice for the marginalized and ensuring that justice is served.
