Nigerian Students Protest Fee Hike for Consular Services

The Nigerian Students Association (NISA), represented by President Comrad Juwon Fayomi, has raised concerns regarding a substantial increase in consular service fees for Nigerians in Australia, set to take effect on March 1, 2026. The new fee structure includes a charge of 150 Australian dollars for services related to passport renewal and emergency travel certificates, with document authentication fees rising to 1,000 Australian dollars per document.

Fayomi highlighted that this fee increase represents a significant burden compared to previous charges, especially as Nigerian students are already managing tuition, accommodation, and immigration compliance costs. The association has requested that the Nigerian High Commission engage in further discussions regarding the new fee structure and consider suspending its implementation to allow for stakeholder consultation, particularly with student representatives.

NISA is willing to engage in dialogue with the High Commission to reach a mutually acceptable resolution for the Nigerian community studying in Australia.
