Nigerian High Commission Announces Fee Hike for Services

The Nigerian High Commission in Canberra has responded to concerns raised by Nigerian scholars regarding a significant increase in administrative fees for consular services. A circular issued on February 26, 2026, announced that starting March 1, 2026, the fees for services such as passport renewal and document authentication would rise to 150 Australian dollars per service, with the authentication fee adjusted to 1,000 Australian dollars per document.

Comrade Juwon Fayomi, president of the Nigerian Scholars Association (NISA), expressed that the new fees represent a substantial increase compared to previous charges. In response, the High Commission stated that the fee adjustments were necessary to meet consular needs in light of current economic realities in Australia.

Although the letter announcing the fee increase was initially issued, it has since been withdrawn for further consultation. The High Commission emphasized the importance of addressing the needs of Nigerians living in Australia and urged the public to disregard misinformation regarding the administrative fees.
