Nigeria's World Cup Dreams End as Playoffs Begin

Nigeria's aspirations to qualify for the 2026 World Cup have effectively ended as intercontinental playoffs begin on March 26, 2023. Six countries from five confederations are competing for the final two slots for the World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has resorted to a legal appeal to maintain a slim hope of qualification after a previous appeal to FIFA regarding an ineligible player was dismissed. The Court of Arbitration for Sport is expected to rule on the case in May, but Nigeria's absence from the World Cup raises questions about the administration of football in the country, which was once ranked as the 5th best soccer nation globally.

The playoffs will feature teams including Bolivia, Jamaica, New Caledonia, and Suriname, with Nigeria's national team, the Super Eagles, having faced challenges during the qualification campaign under coaches Jose Peseiro, Finidi George, and Eric Chell.
