NNPC to Roll Out 50-70 Smart Fuel Stations Across Nigeria in Six Months

Nigeria's state oil company plans rapid expansion of automated filling stations combining petrol sales, EV charging, and vehicle services starting from Abuja…
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited announced Thursday that it will establish between 50 and 70 technology-enabled fuel stations nationwide within the next half-year. The rollout follows the recent commissioning of a pilot facility in Abuja, which the company is positioning as the template for its modernised retail network.
Each station will function as a multipurpose energy hub rather than a traditional petrol outlet. Beyond conventional fuel dispensing, the facilities will offer electric vehicle charging infrastructure, liquefied petroleum gas and compressed natural gas distribution, plus ancillary services including car washing and vehicle maintenance.
The self-service model allows customers to operate fuel pumps independently rather than relying on attendants. Mumuni Dagazau, the NNPC's Executive Vice President for Downstream Operations, unveiled the initiative at the Abuja station's launch event.
He characterised the expansion as part of the company's strategy to transform its existing retail network into contemporary energy and mobility centres, modernising how petroleum products and alternative fuels reach Nigerian consumers. The NNPC addressed employment concerns related to the automated model, with company officials stating the initiative would generate jobs rather than eliminate positions.
The scope of job creation was not detailed in available statements. The 50 to 70-station target represents a significant acceleration in retail infrastructure modernisation, though specific geographic distribution across Nigeria's zones and states has not yet been disclosed.
