NNRA Enhances Nuclear Safety Systems with EU Support

The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) has successfully completed a €1 million technical cooperation project, NG3 01 22, with support from the European Union aimed at strengthening Nigeria's nuclear safety framework. Yau Idri, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NNRA, disclosed this during a dissemination workshop in Abuja.

The project, which marks a significant step in Nigeria's strategy to develop a credible and resilient regulatory system, involved five major work streams focused on improving regulatory governance, institutional processes, and human capacity within the NNRA. Key outcomes include the establishment of an integrated management system to enhance transparency and quality in regulatory decision-making, as well as the development of new regulations governing the licensing of nuclear facilities.

The project also facilitated extensive training programs for NNRA staff, exposing them to international best practices and fostering professional networks. This initiative reflects Nigeria's commitment to ensuring the safe development of nuclear energy and protecting people, property, and the environment.
