Oando's Efuntomi Akpeneye Advocates Business Skills for Lawyers

Efuntomi Akpeneye, the Group Chief Legal Officer of Oando Plc, spoke at the 2026 Law Ladies’ Day hosted by the University of Lagos, where she encouraged aspiring lawyers, particularly women, to develop a strong understanding of business alongside their legal expertise. During the session themed “Mastering the Matrix: Strategies for Women Rising in Corporate Spaces,” Akpeneye highlighted that effective legal advisers must provide commercially viable solutions.

She stated that professional credibility is essential before entering boardrooms, and today’s corporate lawyers should act as trusted advisers who align legal guidance with business realities. Drawing from her experience in the energy sector, she noted that understanding technical operations enhances the ability to offer practical legal advice.

Akpeneye also discussed negotiation strategies, advising that value creation for all parties is crucial. She emphasized integrity in legal practice, urging young lawyers to prioritize accuracy over speed in their advice.
