Ondo Assembly Speaker Faces Impeachment Over Misconduct

The Ondo State House of Assembly is experiencing a deepening leadership crisis as Speaker Rt. Honourable Olamide Oladiji intensifies efforts to avoid impeachment.

Allegations of financial misconduct involving approximately ₦44 million related to the reordering of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) budget have led to a majority of the 26-member assembly endorsing impeachment proceedings. Reports indicate that at least 21 lawmakers support the impeachment notice, prompting the Speaker to engage in last-minute consultations with political stakeholders.

The lawmakers have given Oladiji until Sunday to resign or face impeachment. Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa is reportedly attempting to mediate the situation, but those backing the impeachment remain resolute.

The crisis escalated following allegations from Honourable Olawumi Fayemi-Obayelu, who accused the Speaker of undermining legislative procedures and interfering with oversight functions. She claimed that a House resolution related to the OSOPADEC budget was forged and called for an independent investigation by anti-corruption agencies.
