OPay has dismissed a social media claim that it has ceased using customers' phone numbers as account numbers. The claim, made by an X user named Israel Gharee, suggested that customers should visit agents to convert their phone-linked accounts to standard bank account numbers.

An OPay official, speaking anonymously to Premium Times, clarified that the information was inaccurate and emphasized that any major changes to the account system would be communicated through official channels. The official noted that users were already correcting the misinformation in the comments.

This clarification follows a recent viral report that falsely claimed OPay would shut down operations from September 1, 2026, which the company also reassured customers was untrue, stating that services would continue uninterrupted.
