Kalu Threatens APC Resignation Over Church Disrespect

Orji Kalu, a senator and former governor of Abia State, declared on Channels Television’s Politics Today that he would resign from the All Progressives Congress (APC) if President Bola Tinubu disrespects the Catholic Church. This statement arose amid controversy over a recent meeting between President Tinubu and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), led by Matthew Ndagoso, where the bishops voiced concerns about economic hardship and insecurity in Nigeria.

Cardinal John Onaiyekan remarked that Tinubu appeared unhappy with the bishops' message, while presidential adviser Daniel Bwala accused the Catholic Church of supporting the opposition. Kalu supported the bishops' right to address national issues and clarified that statements from presidential aides should not be interpreted as Tinubu's personal views.

He emphasized that the president maintains a good relationship with the Catholic Church. Kalu also defended Tinubu's economic reforms, acknowledging that while macroeconomic stability is improving, ordinary Nigerians still feel the impact of economic challenges, particularly due to insecurity affecting the microeconomy.
