Osun Poll: A Crucial Test for Nigeria's Democracy

Barrister Pelumi Olajengbesi, spokesperson for the Imole Campaign Council, stated that the upcoming governorship election in Osun State on August 15 is a critical test of Nigeria's democratic institutions, particularly ahead of the 2027 general elections. During a press briefing in Abuja, he urged for a free, fair, and credible election, appealing to both domestic and international stakeholders to monitor the process closely.

Olajengbesi expressed concerns regarding the credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigeria Police Force, alleging that the Osun State police command has become compromised and that the Commissioner of Police is acting in a partisan manner. He reported that the campaign council has submitted a complaint to the British High Commission regarding these issues and has previously petitioned the Inspector-General of Police about insecurity and politically motivated violence in the state.

Olajengbesi insisted that voters must be allowed to elect their preferred candidates without intimidation. Mr. Olufemi Franklin from the Coalition of Public Interest Lawyers echoed these sentiments, describing the election as a litmus test for Nigeria's electoral integrity.
