APC Faces Defeat in Osun Governorship Election 2026

The All Progressives Congress (APC) suffered a defeat in the Osun State governorship election held on August 15, 2026, losing to incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke. Prior to the election, the APC disqualified several aspirants, including Senator Iyiola Omisore, a former deputy governor and influential figure in Osun politics.

Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, the APC national chairman, expressed confidence in the party's decision, despite concerns that it could negatively impact their electoral prospects. Omisore had previously played a crucial role in the APC's 2018 victory over Adeleke, but as the election approached, the APC recognized the mistake of sidelining him.

An emergency reconciliation effort was initiated, led by former Governor Chief Bisi Akande, which included meetings with Omisore and support from former PDP Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola. However, endorsements from Omisore and others came too late, as the electorate seemed resolute in their choice.

The APC's narrow victory in 2018 contrasted sharply with their loss in 2026, marking a significant shift in voter sentiment.
