Police Arrest 23-Year-Old with Loaded Shotgun in Akwa Ibom

On September 6, 2026, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command arrested 23-year-old Mfon Essien in Ikot Ekpene after discovering he was in possession of a loaded locally made shotgun. Essien, a resident of Ikot Inyang Itak Village in Ikono Local Government Area, was intercepted around 12:30 p.m. along Ayah Road, off Uyo Road, following credible intelligence.

A search revealed the shotgun, which was concealed in his clothing, along with a live cartridge. He was taken into custody, and the firearm and ammunition were secured as evidence.

The police have initiated an investigation to ascertain how Essien acquired the weapon, his purpose for carrying it, and any potential connections to criminal networks. Commissioner of Police CP Baba Mohammed Azare stated that the command is intensifying efforts against illegal firearms and will employ intelligence-led policing and community cooperation to enhance security.

Police Public Relations Officer DSP Timfon John emphasized the importance of public cooperation in preventing violent crimes.
