Man Arrested in Kano for Defrauding Students with Fake Jobs

Richard Peter, a 32-year-old suspect, was arrested by the Nigeria Police Force in Kano for allegedly defrauding students from Bayero University Kano by offering fake ushering jobs. The arrest followed a petition submitted by a group of students led by Clementina Paul.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Peter had invited a 38-year-old female student, Faith Dauda, to Mairabo Hotel in the Sabon Gari area of Kano on May 10, 2026. Upon arrival, the victim was allegedly asked to change her attire and left her phone behind, which was claimed to be not allowed at the event venue.

The suspect later took the student to a hotel restaurant, ordered food worth N6,000, and disappeared without paying. After several hours, the victim returned to her room and discovered her phone and other items were stolen.

The police traced the stolen phones using intelligence techniques and intercepted the suspect in Zaria, Kaduna State, as he attempted to flee to Lagos. The police recovered the stolen items and stated that the suspect is currently in custody at the Zonal Criminal Investigation Department and will be charged in court upon completion of the investigation.
