Delta Police Officers Demoted for Extortion Incident

The Delta State Police Command has demoted two officers, Inspector Augustin Jeremiah and Corporal Miracl Ehirim, after they were found guilty of extortion. This decision followed a viral video from January 13, 2026, showing them receiving money from a motorist at a Point of Sale terminal inside the police station.

The officers were subjected to an orderly room trial, where they were found guilty of disobeying the law and engaging in discreditable conduct, contrary to the provisions of the Police Act 2020. As a result, Inspector Jeremiah was reduced in rank to Sergeant, and Corporal Ehirim was demoted to Constable.

Yemi Oyeniyi, the police commission, emphasized that the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, strictly prohibits the use of Point of Sale terminals for receiving money from the public within police stations. Oyeniyi reiterated the commitment of the police force to uphold professional integrity and encouraged the public to report any misconduct.
