Teacher Dies After Assault for Disciplining Pupil

On June 18, 2026, Maryam Usman, a 30-year-old staff member at Brain Mind Nursery Primary School in Ugbamaka, was assaulted by Abdullahi Ishaka and two women after she disciplined a pupil. The attack left Usman with serious injuries, necessitating initial treatment at a hospital in Ugbamaka before being referred to Iko Ojo Hospital in Okpo for further medical attention.

Unfortunately, she passed away on June 25, 2026. Following the incident, the Kogi State Police Command initiated an investigation into the case, classifying it as culpable homicide.

The police spokesperson, SP Oyiza Salisu Afusat, stated that preliminary investigations revealed the assault. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the suspects, who fled the scene.

Once arrested, the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive investigation.
